designers' preference for clean lines / smooth shapes ?
societal obsessions with:
- youth (e.g., not yet needing a bra)?
- thinness (e.g., no little bulges around straps)?
- modesty, esp. for women (i.e., avoiding visual reminder of the bodies we're covering with clothing to start with)?
