GREMLINS was the first film I remember seeing in the theater. It cemented my love of horror comedies, and its influence on my story sensibilities cannot be overstated.

But there was something about STAND BY ME that fundamentally affected how I see the world and what kind of stories I want to tell ❤️

Luck, good & bad, plays such an outsized role in this industry. We gotta accept it.

Many dismiss luck bc they don’t want to diminish their own talent. But ironically even being born w/ talent is luck.

Let go of what you can’t control. Hone the things you can & be ready when luck hits. Fave advice👇

“Lived in” setpieces result in what I love most about superhero tales: everyday folks doing heroic stuff too.

Like the train scene in Spidey 2, the workers clearing a path for Spidey in AMZ & the boy raising the flag in SUPERMAN.

The hero being helped by those he helped, that’s what it’s all about

Me too, KNIGHTFALL was the 1st big Batman comic book event I emotionally invested in. I‘d dreamed of seeing it brought to life since I was 12.

Yet I still can’t believe I saw the Breaking of the Bat on a movie screen. I audibly gasped when I saw they’d recreated the iconic cover.

That got me good.

If you see this, pose a DC comic cover you love

LAST CRUSADE has always been my favorite.

So much so that, as much as I loved BATMAN ‘89, I was Indy for Halloween of ‘89.

Ideal combo of humor, gravitas & swashbuckling action.

From the prologue to the Brody cut-to to Charlemagne to the tank scene to riding off into the sunset, it’s just perfect

Either I read it somewhere back then, or a friend of mine tricked me, but I remember being told that Popeye could be seen in the big crowd of characters at the end.

As a huge Popeye fan, I spent so much time rewinding and replaying that scene.

Popeye is not there.

I’ll never forget the betrayal.

JAWS (1975)

Unused poster art.

From the climax:

Robin: “Holy sardine!”

Batman: “Hand me down... the Shark Repellent Bat-Spray!"

Thematically, JAWS is such a well-structured & clever thing, isn’t it?

These 2 shots serve as bookends. One from below, with the shark at its most powerful. One from above, with the shark about to be defeated. Both in silhouette, both chock-full of symbolism.

Here’s to 50 more years of JAWS love!

My Mount Rushmore of television.

[It’s funny… with most lists, I go back and forth and forth and back a lot. But these jumped out right away. So I guess it will always be these, on every level and in every way.]

20 years!! And it’s still the best origin film.

The "Trauma/Training/Triumph" structure - with Batman being “born” at the midpoint - was the perfect way to explore why Bruce Wayne sees the world in shades of dark.

And the beauty of this trilogy is that by the end, he starts to see shades of light.

Don’t remember the year, but I saw Bill Pullman & who must have been a young, unknown Lewis P at Cold Stone Creamery by the AMC in Burbank.

I think about what they might’ve ordered that day every time I see either of them in a movie. Which means I will prob get ice cream after the new SPACEBALLS 🙌

Yeah, everyone knows that a joke like that only works if the thing you are “mistaken” about is similar to the original thing.

I remember my 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, when they were looking at a sonogram at work:

Describe your favorite movie in the most misleading way possible:

Over the course of one wacky day, a repressed farm boy who is being trained to be a space wizard by a retired Muppet commits incest, attempts patricide, and gets his best friend frozen inside a metal coffin by a criminal space slug.

Between the fascist bullshit propaganda about LA and the military now openly dancing and cheering for him and selling his merchandise at graduations, this is all giving “oh we just so happen to have tons of loyal clones on Kamino ready to be used at the Supreme Chancellor’s whim.”
