A fascinating talk on Origins/Evolution of Botanical Spirals last night by @sandyheth.bsky.social in an @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social / @linneansociety.bsky.social collab. Great to be in the old Anatomy Lect Theatre but wouldn’t do if you were afraid of heights!! #Fibonacci fabulous, #ferns #fossils

Some of my favourite books for tropical plant ID 5/?…This is a brilliant book to consult when you spot a particular character such as sap, glands, stipules. Max was a very patient teacher & giving with his knowledge, may this be published for many years to come! #plantID #SpotCharacters #Maleasia

Some of my favourite books for tropical plant ID 4/? I wrote a few chapters in this book so I’m a bit biased 😝 but it’s a great summary of the tree genera in NG. It’s heavy so not great for taking to field but a pdf is freely available #plantID #trees #trees #NewGuinea #PapuaNewGuinea

Some of my favourite books for tropical plant ID 3/? I’ve never worked in South America but I love this book for general family & generic characters, many of which are applicable elsewhere. Al Gentry’s huge field experience shines through the writing. #plantID #trees #shrubs #climbers #botany

Some of my favourite books for tropical plant ID 2/? When working on plants from Madagascar, this book was indispensable. My copy is all ragged, bashed & muddy from use in the field! #plantID #Madagascar #genusID #trees

Some of my favourite books for tropical plant ID 1/?…my first love is the family Rubiaceae, I used to curate them in the herbarium at RBG, Kew. This has great images & was useful for naming to genus. I wish there was something similar for all areas…Rubiaceae rock but the family is huge!!
