Sankta Lucia is this coming Saturday, I love that it celebrates light…and a fearsome witch who leads a procession of supernatural beings~we were also overjoyed to have been able to take in the full magic of Edinburgh Luciakör at Hexham Abbey this week…SO beautiful ✨ #folklorethursday

The winged horse Pegasus who found immortality as a constellation of stars~was said to favour the fruit of the sea buckthorn~incidentally traditionally used to help altitude sickness~recently backed up by science🌿💫#folklorethursday 1878 img:Pegasus edited to accord the nymphs a degree of modesty🤣

The drifting dunes of Forvie sands on the Aberdeenshire coast cover a village~said to have been lost in the C15th after a 9 day storm raised by three sisters who were deprived of their land by foul means~it is a favourite family beach~my mum always reminds us to listen to the dunes #folklorethursday

In 1616 Elspeth Roach was accused of collecting Yarrow in a ritualised manner…amongst other things. Whilst divining with Yarrow stalks may not be wholly reliable it is great for helping with cold symptoms💚🌿💫 something I explore in The Time Traveller’s Herbal #FolkloreThursday 🤗

Maggie Wall burnt here 1657~a trip yesterday to Dunning and the witches monument~some believe it is actually a C19th cenotaph to those accused of witchcraft+Maggie is a composite character~or maybe the real story was too harrowing and so romanticised during the fairy tale days… #folklorethursday

How frequently the power of the weather is invoked with spells and charms fascinated me when I was researching The Time Traveller’s Herbal #folklorethursday friends~this one calling on wind+floods was used by The Wife of Usher’s Well in Walter Scott’s collection of Border Ballads to summon spirits!
