If I had to pick one, I'd probably go with the idea that Mamdani used the same strategy world leaders have shown works with Trump to get what they want:

Completely insincere flattery, chuminess, and fake "bonding" to make him feel comfortable so that he can be manipulated.

I could come up with 4 different seemingly plausible explanations for how that happened and what it means and I'd have absolutely 0 confidence in any of them actually being the truth.
