(1) continue prepare Boston for the impacts of climate change, (2) move towards becoming a zero-waste community, and (3) protect our natural resources. BCAN members came up with great ideas during our Action Team meeting for what we’d like to see in the next Climate Action Plan.

We also echo the DPU’s call to fund the Mass Save program through non-ratepayer funds whenever possible. The current funding structure is not equitable nor financially sustainable as we improve the livability of our homes and combat climate change.

For too long, these have been privileges only afforded to “market-rate customers.” With this plan, the Commonwealth takes our greatest step towards changing that.

Even with a pared down budget, however, this Plan creates a historic investment in ensuring all of our working families can have warmer homes in the winter with reduced air pollution.

Moreover, they will not translate into meaningful cost savings for our families on energy bills. The real culprits of high energy bills–an aging and expensive gas pipeline system and utility profiteering–remain unaddressed by the DPU’s proposed cuts.

This would not have been possible without Youth Lead the Change advocates who established the City’s first youth-led Participatory Budgeting initiative in 2014, and the outreach efforts of BCAN members who spoke with residents across the City, provided testimonials, quotes, and handed out flyers 🚌🌍
