The point is if we're at the point of US withholding parts for the F-35 from Europe, Europe can withhold critical parts from the US, and then we're both screwed.

Another example would be the ECU which is made by Collins Aerospace, but the ECU itself has many parts from all over the world, including chips from Europe. So while it would be possible to replace those chips with US made one's it would probably take years to do so.

While the F135 is assembled in the US, the engine parts manufacturing is definitely not self-contained in the US. Modern jet engines are super complex and some have more than 40K parts. While P&W makes the F135 engine it subcontracts a lot of the components.

Even that is complicated. Pratt&Whitney makes the engine but they don't manufacture every piece themselves. For example the engine shaft is made in Norway by GKN.
