People don't realise the difference between the mid-20th "Britain", and the 1979-2015 "the UK". I.e. the former a unitary nation of aspiration, the latter a holding cell for "the country".

This is also structural to the UK, without the special relationship, why should the UK survive when the EU is next door as an alternative Union for the 4 nations?

It doesn't matter what they do, the BBC is dying because the Union polity it existed to serve is dying. If there is in the end no "Britain" just Wales, NI, Scotland and "the country", who can the BBC serve?
