In 1976, shortly before Jimmy Carter was elected President, I stood at the National Cathedral, a twenty-six year old grad student, hoping for his success over Gerald Ford. Not once did I think I'd be viewing his funeral at the same place now in my 75th year.

Just a few months ago, we were in LA. Here's the beach from the Santa Monica Pier looking north. Much of that area toward Pacific Palisades is now in ruin from the fire which started over the weekend and has now spread wildly.
