Leasing is so common these days, not only in railways; airlines don’t own aircraft, freight companies don’t own lorries, shipping companies don’t own ships. We can even lease cars rather than buying them.

I doubt that the treasury will want to finance the outright purchase of locomotives and rolling stock, and for GBR to assume the maintenance and repair which is often carried out by the ROSCOs

She gets an allowance for ‘necessary secretarial and office costs’ arising from fulfilling public duties as a former PM. Whether the expenses involved here would be approved is highly questionable imo.
(Interestingly Sunak has elected not to draw any allowance.)

We thought about it, and decided we could just afford it but we would be struggling. Decided our son would not be happy among children with parents who were not struggling, and would be happier with parents who had a bit of money to spend.

Over 50% of German households live in rented accommodation. Similarly in Denmark, Switzerland and Austria. Why do we regard it as being ‘condemned’ to renting?

Had he chosen peace instead of war and confrontation his people could have been as wealthy and Russia a real global power.
