Ah, but their actions are perfectly consistent when you chart them on the axis of profit. Student loans bring $$$ to the servicing companies and create a more desperate workforce, lowering labor costs. So, canceling student loans decreases profit, but removing regulations increases it.

One thing I have tried repeatedly to explain to my Russian Jewish immigrant parents, both MAGA octogenarians, is that their whiteness is highly conditional.

These days a similar home is easily 300-400% of a new engineering graduate salary, and that's before the much higher costs of food, health care, child care, and of course student loans. I feel bad for my kids, both of whom have graduate STEM degrees.

Even when I got out of college in 1990, I was able to reasonably afford a starter 3/2 home, priced at about 170% of my salary, as I had no student loans.
