The Democrats had some midterm conventions in the 70s (though weirdly they held them after the midterms since they were afraid party infighting or a coherent message would hurt candidates).

Allan Baird passed away; he was in charge of the Teamsters boycott of Coors beer in the early 1970s in the Bay Area and worked with Harvey Milk and Howard Wallace to get the SF gay community to join the boycott. Baird was a pioneer in merging labor and gay rights. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

A lot of Democrats didn't like the 50 state strategy (though it helped elect people like Tim Walz). There were snarky news articles about Dean squandering money in places like Alaska. But that's also where they were able to pick up a senate seat in 2008 by less than 4,000 votes.
