Spent my Saturday watching Shoah. Don’t have much to say on it (speechless&tired) - watch it if you have the time. 📽️

There are many existential questions not worth finding the answer to.

A friend has given me a (very long) list of movies he’d like me to scout ahead and watch so I’m gonna aim to write a review for most, if not all, of them. 📽️

Love is timeless, sacrificial, overwhelming, annoying, amazing, situational, weakness. A film too focused on it can end up a little boring. Sorta felt like this story, at least parts of it, weren’t my business. 📽️
Finally time to check out what is undoubtedly the most beloved film of the year thus far. In the cinema, naturally. 📽️

I’m a little late (sorry, stud) but I celebrated Elliott Gould’s birthday today by watching this comedy gem. Happy birthday to my favourite actor. 📽️

Rewatching BlackBerry in cinema really cemented that it’s one of the absolute best of the year thus far.

Pure technical prowess. 📽️

My top four of last week - MIFF and misc. 📽️
August 21, 2023 at 1:30 AM
Sixth (and final) MIFF screening.

Perfect Days, directed by Wim Wenders.

Wenders’ heartwarming take on humanity, following a man who dreams of trees in black and white. Strive for happiness.
August 20, 2023 at 11:02 AM
Fifth screening of MIFF.

Walk Up, directed by Hong Sang-soo.

Sang-soo plays with time, both in the presentation of the story and the content, and presents how simply it moves. Around us, and through us.

Fourth screening of MIFF.

Showing Up, directed by Kelly Reichardt.

An utterly comforting rewatch of a film which I feel so deeply connected to. A real personal favourite.

Third screening of MIFF.

May December, directed by Todd Haynes.

Movie of the year so far. Wish I could articulate my thoughts. Haynes is playful, the concept and comedy is perfectly dark, Charles Melton delivers captivatingly, masterfully.

Can’t wait to rewatch.

Second screening of MIFF.

Passages, directed by Ira Sachs.

So much funnier than expected thanks to superb timing, editing and magnetic performances.
Held back by one of the three leads being underwritten compared to the other two but, nonetheless, a damn fine film.

First screening of MIFF.

Tótem, directed by Lila Avilés.

From corner to corner of the stunning 4:3 frames, the space is filled with an abundance of heart.
Clearly a personal piece, demonstrating the strength of familial bonds no matter how dire the situation.
A great movie cat to top it off.

Just watched the final entry of this pure wuxia goodness.

Tsui Hark’s directed efforts within the franchise are unbelievably well done. 📽️
