Any statistics on whether the Bureau of Statistics publishes more or less statistics than they used to? 😉

Isn't the post-WW2 story of allied approaches to Germany something like that it was initially subject to very punitive measures but this was unsustainable and so focus quickly shifted to stimulating economic recovery and reintegration into the (western) European economy? How is value calculated here

Are people saying “racism doesn’t matter” or “this won’t affect Reform’s polling”? These seem like quite different points

Been a while since I read “The White Man’s Burden” (Easterly) but IIRC aren’t health interventions generally accepted to be an exception to this sort of criticism?

I’m saying that given the current govt in the USA, are you not concerned future US govts might abuse that kind of power? There seem to be a lot of historical examples of people saying if we could only kill these kind of rogue elements perhaps we could solve society’s problems…

If they are inclined to pass death sentences when the party feels embarrassed, doesn’t that suggest that this sort of system (like the death penalty in general) is often open to abuse and applied unevenly?

Societies that do this sort of thing, eg China, don’t seem to be better at dealing with structural incentives for corruption. Is there any evidence that countries with the death penalty have fewer issues with corruption or with wealthy people abusing their power?

I’m open to the idea both phenomenon are at play, but I do find it worrying how easily leftist populist sympathies or the idea of overturning the system are transferable to the far right
November 2, 2025 at 3:34 PM
how do we square the idea that “centrists run interference for fascism” with the apparently increasingly simpatico politics of far-left and far-right? It wasn’t centrists who suggested Trump might be a preferable alternative to a regular dem, defend Russian fascists, or candidates with nazi tats

I think there are definitely chinese people who could do it ( love that chinese guy who does the trump impressions), even people working within the govt, but they're accurate interpretation would probably be overruled by an insistence on literally translating whatever the higher ups wanted to post

What do you class as "being disruptive or causing trouble in bad faith"? these sound like the kind of vague accusations that people love to throw at you on here (unfairly imo)

aren’t they Israel’s largest trading partner? Haven’t seen any indication they’re willing to use economic coercion, let alone military muscle. Now if Netanyahu had a meeting with the Dalai Lama could be a whole different story…
