That's it for tonight! Didn't plan for it but getting this in the mail and then finding out it's Spirk Day lined up too well. Not Tonight Spock? More like Yes, Tonight Spirk!

I leave you with these pics of my cat helping make this thread. He loves BL too. Good night! Happy Spirking.

Final highlights are it still includes this paper listing submission requirements for the zine & this (nsfw) word game at the end that the original owner of this zine mostly filled out! I love when the zines have signs of how their previous owners engaged w/ them.

Can you figure out the last blank?

Another big topic this issue was about the "new" movie The Search for Spock. Ppl were very excited and seemed to love it (I do too seeing as my favorite in TOS is McCoy despite my zine collection). I thought it was fun they compiled reviews as a way for people to see them if they missed that paper.

There's also interview with Kathleen Resch. I enjoyed her point here regarding headcanons. People will enjoy it in different ways, and that's ok! Wise words to not get strung out by someone else's opinion.

"Our individual interpretations of it are as valid as our skills in presenting them."

Many if not most of the responses discuss the definition of gay. I enjoyed this line:

"If a label MUST be assigned to the relationship, let it be simply: lovers."

This issue is from 1984. I love seeing the POV of these fans from before I was born. They write from the US, Canada, England, Scotland, and Australia. Some say they identify as LGBTQ, some don't. I think it's beautiful to see ppl who've been touched by Star Trek to envision a queer future ideal.

It has many fan letters discussing the proposed topic "Do you believe Kirk and Spock are gay?"
Answers range from emphatic yes to no's verging on homophobic but also philosophical discussions on the concept of labels, social construction of sexuality, & that gay or straight dont exist in the future.

Apparently it's Spirk Day (Amok Time airing anniversary) which I didn't know until AFTER a new K/S letterzine came in! I was just saying I wish I could find more and here we are.

I've been skimming it but in honor of Spirk Day, I'll share a little more in depth in this issue than the quoted thread.

Back to reading this.

Oh they sure did find the slant* that turned on a lot of people 😏 a fistful of slants, huh?

*the / between Kirk and Spock amirite

Reading Star Trek Lives! By Jacqueline Lichtenberg, Sondra Marshak, & Joan Winston (1975) to prep for potential panel pitch and getting a kick out of this mail order fan wiki. They worked SO hard for people to access what we can easily take for granted now in fandom.

And finally, a form for nominating various fanworks for the Surak award and fandom activism inspired by Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

That last is of particular interest to me because I'm considering creating a panel about positive fandom impact vs the usual focus on drama/discourse/negativity.

A collection of other articles found in these, including advice on taking rejection (still valuable!), drama of art theft at a convention (nothing has changed), convention photos, and a little madlibs game. Every issue is so unique.

This excerpt features a comparison of published Star Trek novel Killing Time by Della Van Hise. It was recalled for being too explicitly K/S and republished with an edited version (I own both versions!). I love the dedication here. Thank you Kathy. There's info online about this if you're curious.

Like I mentioned, these fanzines were a way to share information. There was no link sharing or AO3 comment to know how someone felt about fanwork. These were how you could find out about other fanzines to order and have mailed to you. Fandom was contained & niche, and even more so queer fandom.

Speaking of, I bought On the Double #5 for this interview with a cis gay male K/S fan. I don't see it discussed as often in western fandom history! The argument that all gay men hate slash/BL is also incorrect & well researched. I love getting to read the POV from a gay K/S fan from the 1980s USA.

While I love to study fandom history and culture then, so did they! There were surveys regarding demographics, trope preferences, etc. One of my treasures is the partially filled out survey in the 2nd pic. I have not yet discovered the results of these questionnaires (if published).

Part two, onto the slash letterzines. The same idea but focused on K/S (Kirk/Spock). These are so hard to find! I wish I could get more. I love the meta. I love knowing what the fore-fujos were thinking. I love this specific drawing. Imagine being this Spock for Halloween.

I'm not going to post many because it's dense. You can read many excerpts on fanlore.

I'll share this bc it's good advice 40 years later, about how to engage in fandom (or life): if you're angry, take a step back and come back to your feelings later rather than a knee-jerk response in the moment.

The thing that entertains me most about these and why I collect letterzines to begin with is this:

Fandom has not changed.

The war between headcanons, insulting strangers, & people loving to watch the drama has been going for longer than internet anonymity.

See these from Interstat in the 1980s.

Happy Star Trek Day! How else would I celebrate than sharing more fanzines. We're diving into letterzines! What are they? Non-fiction zines printing LoC (Letters of Comment) to have conversations, share reviews of fic/zines, and share news. That's right lads, pre-internet fanboards & discourse.

Old (2020) BL comic about a ghost/ghost hunter I will continue/print someday because there should be more gay ghosts from the 1990s with bleached hair into boybands and not only sad old ghosts from the 1800s
