I measure particle jets! 🎉 https://leblanc.physics.brown.edu/
Congratulations to the class of 2025! 🎓🎉@brownphysics.bsky.social

Tomorrow's lecture in my class is about pitfalls to avoid when designing figures -- quite a fun topic to prepare! 🧪

… and today, another @ippog.bsky.social masterclass! With six high school classes, we discussed proton structure, jets, and how AI intersects with particle physics. It was a treat to moderate the VC with one of @atlasexperiment.bsky.social’s most ‘heavy metal’ physicists, Martin Rybar!🧪🔬

I was happy to host an @ippog.bsky.social particle physics masterclass VC today! High school students from Poland & Greece compared LHC data analyses, and asked about life working at @cern.bsky.social. 🧪🔬

We discussed positive impacts of HEP on society, incl. medical technologies like PET scans!

I once again want to plug one of the 'simple tool' websites I use the most when prepping #physics talks and lectures: www.unicodeit.net, made by @svenkreiss.bsky.social and Kyle Cramner.

I don't even know how to open the equation editor on my computer, and I hope that I never will! 🧪

I took advantage of the holiday weekend to get some lecture prep done, and clearly made the most of it. 🧪

Today is my first day as research faculty at Brown! Getting settled in, need to next bring in some books and plants … 📚

I had a great time at DESY this week learning about the bleeding-edge of AI in particle physics at #ML4Jets2023! Many thanks to the organisers @GregorKasieczka, @freyablekman, & all for their hospitality! 🔬🎉🤖🧪

Getting high-quality signals w/o noise from pile-up is one of the biggest experimental challenges at the #LHC. We're improving @ATLASexperiment reconstruction in #Run3 w/ timing information⏰ and #AI🤖, presented this week at #BOOST23! learn more: https://atlas.cern/Updates/Briefing/Signal-Noise 🧪

And because good things often come in pairs at the LHC, please enjoy this second event display of another would-be-signal-candidate! 🧪✌️✌️

For the connoisseurs : this is the distribution of events in the search in the m4j-<m2j> plane... 🧪

It was a lot of fun to work on a search again! We didn't see any significant 4-jet resonances in the
@ATLASexperiment
Run 2 data, but if we had, it could have looked something like this. You can read about this search today on the
@arxiv : https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.14944 (🎉🎉)(🎉🎉) 🧪

On Twitter, I mostly followed scientists: here, I hardly follow anyone.

So, scientists, please introduce yourselves and share your best STEM follows (of all stripes)!

It was a treat to talk about a photon & multijet measurements from the LHC at #SMatLHC 2023 today! Although I couldn't go to @Fermilab, hopefully I still illuminated the many results of @ATLASexperiment
& @CMSExperiment
from afar.💡🎉🔬

Evidence that people have made it back to CERN from the Vancouver ATLAS Week.

Good morning from #CERN! I'm a scientist studying quarks and gluons with the #ATLASexperiment, to learn about the #StrongForce and search for new particles.
