Blue arrows point to air flow down the trachea to the posterior air sacs, then the lungs, the anterior air sacs and back out the trachea. This unidirectional flow prevents air mixing and increases respiration efficiency, as seen in nature with birds. Gas exchange occurs in the parabronchi labelled in yellow. The middle image features a fictional ‘accessory lung’ that has separate inhalant and exhalant tracheae. These are extra organs bioengineered into kaiju to use in addition to their main ‘avian’ systems. The bottom image features a fictional ‘accessory turbine’ lung. Gray synthetic, osseous turbines create a constant flow of air without needing to use respiratory muscles. The Great Worms rely entirely on modified turbine systems for pulmonary respiration. (Side note: all of Nyreen’s kaiju utilize photosynthesis to supplement their oxygen, using either green or red chlorophyll.)
