I am daily grateful that I read Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet at the right moment for me to internalize "On Giving": my automatic reaction to cries for means-testing, warnings that someone will "take advantage" (how? by *eating*?), or anything else of the sort is to ask, "And who are you...?"
You often say, “I would give, but only to the deserving.” The trees in your orchard say not so, nor the flocks in your pasture. They give that they may live, for to withhold is to perish. Surely he who is worthy to receive his days and his nights, is worthy of all else from you. And he who has deserved to drink from the ocean of life deserves to fill his cup from your little stream. And what desert greater shall there be, than that which lies in the courage and the confidence, nay the charity, or receiving? This analysis ought to be everywhere. The canard that Harris's problem was insufficient outreach by the campaign rather than misogynoir from white voters cannot die quickly enough.

The numbers spell it out. Harris actually won poor voters overall. Among people making less than $30,000 a year, she edged Trump, 50 to 46, according to exit polls from the 2024 election. She crushed it with poor Black voters. She carried poor Latinos. She even made some surprising inroads in Appalachia, like eastern Kentucky, where voters had finally gotten tired of being conned by Republicans. That was supposed to be Bernie’s sweet spot — the salt-of-the-earth laborers who hate billionaires — but it was Harris who actually gave them something to work with. And still, poor whites as a group went for Trump. White men without college degrees voted 69 to 29 for him. White women without degrees, 63 to 35. Those numbers aren’t a working-class problem. Those numbers are a poor-white problem. And they’re the ones Bernie keeps sweeping under the rug. And it wasn’t because Harris was “vague.” She rolled out detailed plans on wages, childcare, housing, healthcare — so many that PBS had to publish a catalog just to keep track. She didn’t just mention the working class; she practically set up camp on their front porch. If you were playing a drinking game where you took a shot every time she said “working class,” you’d be dead by day three. But poor whites — especially poor white men — didn’t care. They wanted Trump. And that’s not a messaging failure. That’s a cultural and racial loyalty problem.

Say what you want about the Brownshirts (no, really, they were Nazis, say whatever you want about them), at least their kind of government-approved brutality was hard to pirate by someone with an extra $50 and overnight shipping. So stop saying that ICE is like the Brownshirts. The Brownshirts wanted everyone to see them beat people in the streets. They did public terror. ICE does plausible terror so they can go out and get tacos on the weekend.

This is the version of the results I got when I lied* and rated all the seafood options as neutral on how likely I would be to finish them.

*The true answer is "not at all *because I don't want to die*," not because of personal preferences on taste, texture, etc.
The results are 80% middle class and lower-middle class, ~70% lower class, ~65% upper-middle class, and ~30% upper class. The text reads "your food choices could not be tied to any one social class."

Mutual aid is not “a thousand points of light,” George H. W. Bush’s euphemism for replacing the public social safety net with charity. There is no substitute for the state, whose obligation is to redistribute the nation’s wealth for the greater good of the greatest number of people. But when the state is a malevolent kleptocracy, mutual aid—neighbors helping neighbors—starts to look like radical civil disobedience, less a thousand points of light than a brilliant beam shining toward a different world.

Beasley exercised her rights to a recount, then accepted her loss equanimously. Now Newby is the chief justice, and he pulled out all the stops to help Griffin reverse his defeat. These Republican judges will pursue power at all costs, evincing zero respect for democracy or civil rights. Our constitutional system was not built to withstand a two-party system in which one side plays by the rules and the other scorns those rules as a sucker’s game."

The Cigarette Smoking Man: Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while there's a peanut butter cup or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast and the taste is... fleeting. So, you end up with nothing but broken bits filled with hardened jelly and teeth-shattering nuts. And if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you got left is an empty box filled with useless brown paper wrappers.
