The length of the fic doesn’t matter but this sort of structure always feels right to me.

I tend to agree here. I have read slow burns where they don’t get together until the very end. For me as a writer, I usually aim to have lots of pining in the first half, something significant at the midpoint and then overcoming final obstacles to properly get together in the second half.
