Devil’s sight+Darkness spell gives you a one sided smoke bomb, which has a lot of utility if you’re creative enough. The Misty Visions invocation is also really useful, though illusions are only as useful as the creativity of their user.

Realistically, your dm was probably never going to give you an unwinnable encounter anyways, no matter how strong or weak you are. Unless the party does something really dumb like challenging a beholder to a staring contest or something.

I’d say teamwork is still more important because action economy is your most powerful tool as a party.
