Short thoughts on movies new and old but mostly new.
#GladiatorII is a such a good follow up to the original. The action and visuals are a step up from its predecessor.

Surprisingly the story ties together pretty seamlessly with the original.

Denzel delivers some of the best moments in the film I was enthralled every time he was on screen.

#conclave was a solid (political?) thriller, if not a little predictable

The standout for me was the score by Volker Bertelmann and I’m sure he’ll have another Oscar nom for this project

I just wish it took a few more big swings when I came to the script but all and all really enjoyable

Saw #heritic there were things I really enjoyed mainly Hugh Grant’s performance I felt like the script was meh

I’m not a religious person but I felt like it hinged on surface level atheist babble

It felt like being stuck in a room with Bill Maher trying to prove to me that religion is a farce

Just watched #azrael on shudder. I really enjoyed it! Tight script from Simon Barrett that works within its limitations.

The audience was just dropped right in for better or worse! The backstory is vague but less is more in this case.

Bloody and nasty with lots of good kills.

#trickrtreat might be the definitive Halloween movie for me

Love the anthology aspect of the film that ties together quite satisfyingly

It so fun super campy and has the right amount of gore

Also might have the best (sexiest?) werewolf transformation scenes on film

Carnival Of Souls might just be the best looking movie ever

Horror franchise remakes I genuinely think are good

Suspiria (2018)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

Evil Dead (2013)

Hills Have Eyes (2006)

House of Wax (2005) it’s kind of its own thing but still counts

Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Thoughts on #daddyshead

Another meditation on grief with a few scares but mostly full of forgettable scenes.

One issue is how quickly the kid believes that his father has truly come back from the dead. He was too old for that.

I’m sure the explanation is that he’s grieving. Total Copout.

#Smile2 was next level! Leaps and bounds better than the first.

The original, leaned too heavily on the current “doom and gloom - grief is ever permeating” trope that’s so prevalent in horror at the moment.

This one was a lot more fun, campy and over the top.

Naomi Scott is a star

Recently watched #womanofthehour Solid effort by Anna Kendrick. I think she has a great understanding of visual language.

Daniel Zovotto was incredible. He toes the line of being charming and creepy so well.

My main gripes were with the script which felt a little trope-y.

Saltburn was wildly stupid but at the same time really entertaining.

I really don’t think Fennel was trying to make any indictments on the middle class or any class for that matter. I think she was just trying to
work with what she knows.

It made no sense but was fun.
