There is a washbasin, a chair with a tatty dressing gown slung over it, and a window with the curtains drawn. Near the exit leading south is a phone. There is a flathead screwdriver here. I really enjoyed this book, kind of a literary magical novel. The audio version (it’s available in our library!) has an excellent narrator. It’s the author’s first novel and has all the lush scenery and detail of someone who revised about a million times. 🥰

I just finished this series after starting it a few years ago (how was that two years ago??) and the current moment is the best time to have read book 3. Gives hope amidst horror, despite of and because systems always work the way they were founded and designed - until they’re stopped & rebuilt.

Sometimes you have to relax and let your tail down.

Highlighting this for posterity. Glenn Youngkin’s inability to do much harm in Virginia, thanks to Dem roadblocks, made some people forget he’s not a moderate. Good to have this refresher.

Well, Youngkin shrugged, he "can't speak" for Trump, but he was certain that Tapper was "misrepresenting (Trump's) thoughts." Some of the people who watched Youngkin's appalling dishonesty immediately thought of one of the most famous passages from George Orwell's 1984: "The Party told him to reject the evidence of his eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command." But this interpretation gives Youngkin too much credit. Orwell's dictators were able to terrify people with torture and deprivation into accepting the government's lies. Youngkin, however, is not a terrified subject of an authoritarian regime: He's just an opportunist. Like I.D. Vance, he knows exactly what he's doing. Youngkin is demanding that everyone else play along and pretend that Trump is just a misunderstood immigration hawk, and then move on - all so that people like Youngkin can later say that he was a loyal Republican when he contends for the leadership of the GOP after Trump is either defeated, retired, or long gone. I was so sad when I realized our mini vacation was during Art on the Avenue, but look what’s at Virginia Beach right outside our hotel!
