The Trump administration’s new law, H.R. 1 (2025), is changing SNAP. It is reducing benefit amounts, adding barriers to receive benefits, and making every Marylander pay more as the federal government shifts costs to the state. Even though the federal government is shut down and SNAP benefits are pausing on November 1st, customers who want to receive SNAP once the shutdown ends must follow these new rules. We did not ask for these changes and we do not think they are helpful. But because the federal government makes the rules for SNAP, we have to follow them. What is Changing? Starting November 1, 2025, up to 80,000 Marylanders will be subject to new work requirements to keep receiving SNAP. If you are in one of these groups, you will most likely be subject to these new work requirements: An adult between the ages of 55 and 64; An adult who has children age 14 to 17 living in your home; A veteran; A young adult who aged out of out-of-home (foster) care under age 24; or Unhoused; People who are subject to this requirement must work or participate in qualifying activities (including volunteering or job training) for at least 20 hours per week—or earn at least $217.50 weekly—to continue receiving SNAP benefits."
