The first week begins tonight and brings together an extraordinary group of musicans: Jimmy Heath on saxophone, Slide Hampton on trombone, Kenny Barron on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. They have all, with the exception of Mr. Jones, put in their time under Mr. Gillespie's leadership.

Mr. Gillespie's pleasure in the group makes him grope for words. "Owww, that group is good," he said over lunch in a midtown restaurant. "I've been playing with Kenny since he was a little kid, and he and Jimmy know how I think better than I do. Cranshaw has a beat like a gorilla. And I want Elvin to play like he usually does, hard."

For Mr. Heath, who first joined Mr. Gillespie's big band in the early 1940's, the show will be a homecoming.

Do they have any regrets not signing with Maverick Records, the Madonna-led label that offered the band a contract back in their heyday? “We didn’t like the bands that were associated with the label,” front man Eric Bachmann explained. “We don’t want to be associated with Candlebox. I know that’s pretentious, but we’re going to own it.” Madonna herself, however, was both “awesome” and “classy,” he said, though there was some awkwardness. “She came to one of our shows and sat down backstage. We were talking about records … and then there was a silence, we were both looking down. I said, ‘Do you want to say something about my shoes?’ She said, ‘Well, they’re kind of dorky.’” (For the record, they were Chucks.) “But we were both smiling, so it was more flirty than hostile.”

Well it is just a couple of blocks from the inspiration for “Double Vision”

It was 12 months before the Rangers’ magical mystery ride through the 1979 playoffs, a spin that would take them to the Stanley Cup finals for only the third time in 30 years. Maybe it was a ‘vision’ of things to come the following year.
The month was April … the year was 1978 … the Rangers’ opponent was the Buffalo Sabres in the preliminary round of the playoffs.

Goaltender John Davidson was between the pipes for the Blueshirts as they hosted the Sabres at Madison Square Garden, down 1-0 in the best-of-three game series. It was during this second game – on April 13 – that Davidson, through no true actions of his own, inspired a rock song, “Double Vision,” by the group Foreigner – one of the hottest rock bands of that era. Coincidentally, some of the band’s members were also avid hockey fans … Sabres loyalists to boot.

During the action, Davidson was the recipient of a hard shot off his goalie mask by a Buffalo player, which shook the tall netminder for a few moments.
“To this day, I don’t even know who took the shot, but I had my bell rung pretty good, I can tell you that,” recalls JD.

Describing the action on television that night were Jim Gordon and Bill Chadwick, two of the most popular broadcasters in Rangers history. They talked about Davidson probably suffering from “double vision” after absorbing such a heavy blow. They probably even over-used the phrase. Some of the members of Foreigner, including frontman Lou Graham, were watching the game that night and, presto, they had a name for a song they were working on, “Double Vision.” It became one of the group’s biggest hits.
