It's the difference between the paladin and the conduit going "It is fine. Why? Because I am here"

And the censor staring into some goblin's soul and telling them "I AM THE FLAIL OF GOD. HAD YOU NOT COMMITTED GREAT SINS, GOD WOULD NOT HAVE SENT A PUNISHMENT LIKE ME UPON YOU."

I'm imagining a fight in Draw Steel that actually needs to be resolved through a negotiation. Or using the Do The Thing combat objective rules to interact with the dreamer's psyche or something.

I've always thought the most well executed of these fights in media are resolved by...the heroes realizing that violence CAN'T solve that sort of problem. Like in MARVEL SPOILERS Thunderbolts, you can't punch out the manifestation of your depression. That fight ends in a big group hug. END SPOILER.

That guy looks like he should be in charge! He's a man of the people. Well, not these people, these people are all going to die.

Noooooooo! MCDM's customer support is very good though. Reach out to Hello@mcdmproductions.com and they'll almost certainly replace the book, if you'd like.

"Now Brennan, for this episode you'll be serving our contestants' director with one simple rule: every time they hit your monsters they win points, and every time they miss, you win points."

This delightful

Summoner? I hardly know her!

Ahem. Undead and demon portfolios are the most straightforward. Elementals and fey swerve hard into control and on-death effects for your minions. The level of complexity you're comfortable with should inform your choice, somewhat.

Necromancer art goes hard tho.

You all dove into the deep end at fourth level, but it sounds like you all had an amazing time! How was your experience running things?

The players all sitting around the table might be my favorite art in the book

They lack the snazzy art included in their Delian Tomb starter adventure, but MCDM's posted a pregenerated character for each class on their website you want to jump right into playing.

Easily one of the most stunning pieces in the book.

No plan survives contact with the party

I think Draw Steel, Against All Tyrants, and Until the Last Villain dies all really lean into that same fun vibe as Flee, Mortals! I love the trend of titles (and abilities names) you can yell out at the table

The basic layout matches the art entries in the ancestries section - two characters in a narrow piece. Meaning this is almost certainly for the ancestries book we're getting down the road.

Radenwights my beloved

In other words, those games are so inexpensive because they are explicitly not being charged what they're actually worth.
August 3, 2025 at 3:55 PM
Many other games operate at a loss because the people working on them do not use those games as their main source of income. They're financing their passion projects through their day jobs outside the industry.
August 3, 2025 at 3:54 PM
Not only that, but in addition to the small army of very well compensated freelancers and contract workers involved in making the game, MCDM maintained a full time staff of 11 people throughout much of Draw Steel's development. MOST people working in the TTRPG space do not do so as their main job.

If you're able to join any of the Codex playtest, I think they actually have an early rules implementation for the radenwights ancestry, though I don't know how up to date it is
August 2, 2025 at 8:19 PM
Radenwights are currently being worked on as a playable ancestry! They'll be released alongside fairies, gnomes, goblins, shadow elves, and *checks notes* dragonfly people.
August 2, 2025 at 8:19 PM
On *the same page* as the first image you've clipped about authentic vs comedic names is a breakdown of naming conventions for each ancestry.

And somewhere, located among all that, is a paragraph in each section saying "but if you don't like this default stuff, you can of course use your own "
