I want to believe OpenAI has no moat but they do appear to be years ahead of any existing competition. Having played with HuggingFace/Alpaca, they still don’t come close to the capabilities offered by OpenAI which are constantly innovating (i.e Plugins just rolled out). Seems gloomy for open source.

This isn’t him, this has to be some low-effort under-10m param text-gen model trained to mimic some of his humour but falling flat. A Markov Chain Generator could probably do better than this impersonator. I miss the real Karpathy but he’s probably busy devising grand plans in his Hacker House :(

My grandparents grew up under a brutally suppressive communist dictatorship. First time my Babushka saw a pineapple she said to me “must be an old cabbage, it’s starting to flower”. Safe to say she didn’t grow up eating bananas and doesn’t know wtf a Gros Michel “Thickey Mickey” tastes like.

Fascinating for sure. User experience is everything here. I wonder how the “block list” implementation will look. If it is not done in a transparent manner, there will be concerns about censorship. Also, how complex can the list get, this may impact the willingness of users to adopt them effectively
