I finally resigned my membership of the Labour Party today. This is what I wrote to my MP @meghillier.bsky.social on why, as a British Jew, I could no longer be part of it.
In 2020 I joined the Jewish Labour Movement, eager to help rebuild the Labour Party as the natural political home for British Jews. In 2022 I followed this up by becoming a full party member. While the current leadership may boast that it has “changed the party” to make it a welcoming home for Jews again, it is worth reflecting on why it was the natural home for British Jews in the first place and how the actions of the leadership has betrayed that legacy. In 1904, my great-great-grandfather Nathan arrived in the East End, fleeing pogroms and poverty in the-then Russian Empire. Much of his family left in the following years, his brother only two years later in 1906, yet none of them were able to join him in London. This was because the Conservative government of the day, spurred on by the fascist street thugs of the British Brothers’ League marching through Whitechapel and other antisemitic violence throughout the UK, passed the supposedly race-blind, but implicitly anti-Jewish, Aliens Act of 1905. Whilst some had the courage then to oppose this moral failure, including a young Churchill who crossed the floor and joined the Liberals in protest, and the then TUC president James Sexton who denounced the Act at TUC conference, the Act was implemented and slowed the entry of Jewish refugees into the UK to a crawl. I do not need to tell you the fate that befell many, including many in my own family, who remained in Eastern Europe as a result. To this day the Act is remembered as the most disgraceful instance of Antisemitism being passed into British Government policy, and it ensured that British Jews would remain mistrustful of the Conservative Party for decades. Today, by yielding to Reform, Tommy Robinson, and the British Brothers’ League of our time, the Home Secretary has put up a good tribute act.
