It’s the latter. They circumvent a lot of the luxury tax with them. A lot of those deferments won’t be paid until that player is no longer a Dodger, so it won’t ever count against the luxury tax.

Except that other teams wouldn’t be able to pay that ludicrous amount of money down the road, so no one would take that contract.

I call BS. The Dodgers have played the system with massively deferred contracts, which limits the effectiveness of the already somewhat ineffectual revenue sharing system. Other sports, NFL for example, share revenue much more evenly, including broadcast revenues.
