The Friends of BLS statement on August 1, 2025 Today, President Trump called into question the integrity of the Employment Situation report that the BLS released this morning. He accused BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer of deliberately reporting false numbers to reflect poorly on this administration. This baseless, damaging claim undermines the valuable work and dedication of BLS staff who produce the reports each month. This escalates the President's unprecedented attacks on the independence and integrity of the federal statistical system. The President seeks to blame someone for unwelcome economic news. The Commissioner does not determine what the numbers are but simply reports on what the data show. The process of obtaining the numbers is decentralized by design to avoid opportunities for interference. The BLS uses the same proven, transparent, reliable process to produce estimates every month. Every month, BLS revises the prior two months' employment estimates to reflect slower-arriving, more-accurate information. This rationale for firing Dr. McEntarfer is without merit and undermines the credibility of federal economic statistics that are a cornerstone of intelligent economic decision-making by businesses, families, and policymakers. U.S. official statistics are the gold standard globally. When leaders of other nations have politicized economic data, it has destroyed public trust in all official statistics and in government science. BLS operates as a federal statistical agency and is afforded autonomy to ensure the data it releases are as accurate as possible. To politicize the work of the agency and its workers does a great disservice not only to BLS but to the entire federal statistical system which this country has relied on for almost 150 years. Kennedy, Jr. Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human services on The President's Fiscal Year 2026 Budget before House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health U.S. House of Representatives June 24, 2025 The mission of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS or Department) is to enhance the health and well-being of the American people. President Trump and all of us at HHS take that charge seriously. So, when a program is not as effective as it can be, or costs more than it ought to, or fails to deliver on its promise change and reform are necessary. The President's Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Budget applies this mindset to the work of the Department, making thoughtful and strategic decisions to transform HHS and better serve the health and well-being of the American people. The budget invests in methods to address chronic disease, protect American families from environmental toxins, promote nutrition as well as food and drug safety, strengthen services for American Indians and Alaska Natives, encourage innovation in America's healthcare future, and focus resources toward proven and effective initiatives. This budget also recognizes the fiscal challenges our country faces today, and the need to update and redirect our investments to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world. The FY 2026 Budget request includes reforms to put healthcare spending on a sustainable fiscal path. We must remake the government to maximize efficiency and productivity in order to fulfill the President's promise to Make America Healthy Again (MAHA). HHS has made progress towards these goals, enhancing the health of Americans while instituting significant workforce reductions and identifying over $13 billion anticipated in contract savings. And there is more to come. Over the next few months, we will work together with Congress to restructure the Department and improve how we deliver services to the American people. HHS takes seriously our role as responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars, and we look forward to working with you to implement the President's agenda while continuing to cut government bloat. Protecting the health of Americans has to be done hand in hand with protecting our nation's fiscal health-they rely on each other. Action #10: Clean up (and build up!) your contacts. It may seem odd, but this is probably the most powerful action you can take on this list. Review your contacts, and consider putting them into categories. If you’re only in touch with some people on social media, now is the time to send them your real contact information and request the same. You cannot rely on social media to manage your contacts, or for the purposes of outreach and advocacy. Your network is your most powerful asset, and you want to have as much influence over it as possible. Social media networks can collapse, get banned, or be purchased by an autocrat. Note that this action is best done with a decent-size screen and a keyboard: Use a single platform to store and manage contacts: Google Contacts, iCloud, a spreadsheet, or whatever works for you. Clean up your existing contacts: Delete outdated addresses, numbers, etc. Reach out to friends and family (even the ones with difficult politics) via social media to get their real contact information (phone, email), and add them to your contacts. Augment your contacts with more useful information (like birthdays, mailing addresses, and even pictures if you like). Add local community activists to your list (regardless of their respective issues or whether you know them personally). Add local elected officials to your list. Organize your contact list into categories or groups (such as local, family, work, college friends, softball league, church, etc). You don’t have to go overboard, but these lists will be really useful later. Extra credit: Find a respected loved one or community leader, and offer to help them do this action, too.
