Every now and then we would go higher, but mostly just to see how technique would hold up at higher loads. In the beginning I would really struggle to keep my positions off the floor, so it was clear I needed just strength at the bottom, in which case heavier pulls are kind of called for.

Yes, but only because I was both much stronger than what showed in my lifts (180 kg fs to 120 kg cnj), and because my pulling strength was relatively weak (I’ve never deadlifted more than I could squat). Even then in volume it was mostly in the 110% range, only going up infrequently
