I was in the Camp Sherman area a couple of weekends ago and the Tamaracks, subspecies of Larch, were incredible!

We had a memorable time at the House of Metolius Writers Retreat this past weekend in eastern Oregon! A group of writers & would-be writers (that’s me) learning with a talented novelist, sharing stories, experiences, writing exercises, basking in high desert beauty. #writing 1/2

Added some color and permanence to my office wall. Thanks to @kotenrose.bsky.social for the lovely Japanese-styled art on the left. Middle lower captures a family memory of Nantucket Island. Oregon’s Manzanita Beach shipwreck from early 20th century on the right. 1/2

I cooked Fresh Figs and Chicken Thighs in Shallot-Balsamic Reduction for tonight’s dinner, with a side of green beans in a marinade that included fresh basil and mint from our herb garden. Best reaction upon first bite from my wife, Maria. #cooking #retirementActivities

He looked good in any Boston uniform. Will miss him dearly. Should I now root for the Panthers to win the Cup? #BradMarchandTrade

When approaching a beach like this, it’s not recommended to try to walk on the sand. If I had only followed that advice, my sneakers would not be waterlogged because of a sneaker wave. #WinterBeachRules

Got an Insert an Invert zine from Saimi Hanma, @kellybrenner.bsky.social, yesterday. It’s beautiful!

It’s #BlackHistoryMonth, and I’ve just purchased this book I should have read when it was released in 2020. I own a kindle because of dust mite allergies, but I’m getting this one in hardcover. Reading it in coffee shops is my small way to stand up for what’s right. #History

About halfway through this expansive study of international relations in the interwar period. Great book, learning a lot. #histbookchat

All excited to carve the turkey with my new Cangshan carving set. While cleaning, I somehow placed one of my fingers against the blade — whoops! Lot of chaos later, and just a nasty cut, I was able to use it, correctly this time. What’s a holiday without a little drama.

Perfect beach-walking weather at Cannon Beach (Oregon, if you’re not familiar with the PNW). High 50s/low 60s F, light winds. Out towards Haystack Rock, sneakers in, outpacing everyone on the hard sand. Back in, barefoot in the low tide at my feet. Great transitional day from summer to fall.

Breathing in the salty air is so freshening! Makes me think of Helen Czerski’s The Blue Machine (How the Ocean Works), where I read about salt’s effects on ocean and ice dynamics.
