This is the bit I just can't get my head around. I think he genuinely believes this about himself. But I don't know how to square it with a government that obsesses over electoral strategy (executed badly) at the expense of policy, and ducks tough political choices at every turn. Doesn't make sense

They're coming perilously close to saying that having regressive views on social issues is what makes you working class. Which, combined with 'we loathe our actual voters and want Proper Working Class ones instead', is taking the party in some pretty weird directions.

Appreciate that there really might not be a less bad way to do it. But a problem with their strategy (and I'm not sure if it's inherent to a right-on-culture + left-on-economics approach or just poor execution) is that, so far, this seems to have been the result: bsky.app/profile/step...
Maybe I'm wrong and the regulatory stuff will suddenly cause a huge uptick in economic confidence and happiness by 2029. But I think the problem ATM is this government is more leftwing than New Labour in ways that irritate the centre and right, and more rightwing in ways that infuriate the left.
