A palimpsest is where two or more documents are blended, for instance because one document was partially erased and then the second one written over the top.
They show up in history, in things like wax tablets and parchment.

The indenture and chirograph are documents rather than sticks, to record e.g. an employment contract. Two copies of the important words are written on one piece of parchment. For a chirograph, the word 'chirographum' is written in the gap between them, and the paper is cut along the word.

First, split tally sticks, which are one of my favourite things. Get a long thin bit of wood, cut it along its length but not all the way, so it's like a wooden tuning fork. Cut notches across both prongs of the fork to record e.g. how many barrels of wine you will buy / sell. It's a receipt.
