Disappointed about some of the words that don’t make it into the Spelling Bee dictionary…

The other senior author on this paper, Glenn Dunshea, is an old friend of 20+ years. We focus on different systems but finally found a science project to work on together and it was a blast! In case you need to hear it again, do yourself a favor and work with people you like!

Two last two things:
This paper comes from the thesis project of a super star MSc student @uu.se, Cesc, who put in a tremendous amount of work. By the way, he's looking for a PhD in case anyone is interested... #ProudPI

At first glance, our results suggest eDNA samples match best with local composition (5 m). But this pattern fell apart when we considered random locations in the LFDP. eDNA was no better an indicator of the standing tree community in a specific location than at other random locations in the plot.
August 20, 2025 at 2:39 PM
We used a confusion matrix approach to benchmark how well eDNA corresponded to the standing tree community across spatial scales ranging from a 5-100 m radius around the eDNA sample location.
August 20, 2025 at 2:39 PM
Unsurprisingly, we detected relatively abundant taxa more often in eDNA samples than rare taxa. Also, taxa tended to be more often detected in eDNA samples when the nearest known individual of that taxon was nearby.

There is *a lot* of interest in using DNA sequenced from soil/water/air samples (eDNA) to characterize and monitor biodiversity. One big question: what is the spatial scale at which eDNA data represents communities? After all, we are usually interested in the distribution of organisms, not DNA.

Impressive amounts of pine pollen in Uppsala. Thinking of getting into the supplements business because apparently it’s a thing.

Recently back from the #EcologicalMethods class in Öland #UppsalaUniversity. It was my 5th time running this field trip - always great to see students grappling with their projects in this landscape.

Very happy to have @danielfzuleta.bsky.social visit in Uppsala! His seminar on tropical tree mortality highlighted tons of fascinating work with #ForestGEO, @ngeetropics.bsky.social, @forestplots.bsky.social and others. Great examples of how to work well with big teams on big questions in ecology!

The SVS 100 Year Symposium was a wonderful gathering of plant ecologists and geographers!

Thanks to everyone who participated in person and online. We'll see you again in 100 years 😂!!

(But, seriously, check out our website to stay up-to-date with the SVS: sites.google.com/view/svsplan...)
