A Wall slide-up like in Mario Galaxy or Hat in Time feels good because it doesn't change the direction you're moving. If you do put a ledge grab into a platform fighter, it should have more options (jump, drop, attack, hang) because an auto-jump feels pretty restrictive.

I've replayed all of them at least once a year since they came to NSO. I'm close to beating Cranky Kong's challenge in DKC1: beat the game with one life in under an hour.

I mostly agree those systems are retro, but time alone doesn't determine whether something is retro. SNES games were already considered retro when the gamecube launched 10 years later. Your average modern gamer is playing Fortnite on the PS4 which launched 13 years ago.
