He really is, although it’s worrying how many people seem to take it seriously

Yes makes sense, that would be an interesting thread, not sure why that important point was so incidental to the story above.

Just felt a bit odd that this key element of the family income was referred to incidentally. The fact she’s not earning is far more impactful than the tax rate, rent level etc
February 13, 2026 at 9:42 AM
I wasn’t making any value judgment at all, just pointing out that one salary is rarely enough for a family to feel well off.
February 13, 2026 at 9:39 AM
But surely the key point is that the wife isn’t working? It can’t be that surprising that if someone isn’t working that their family is unlikely to be well off?
February 13, 2026 at 9:30 AM
Fully agree with that, a press acting in good faith and explaining the same would also be a big help
February 8, 2026 at 12:57 PM
Ok good luck getting the government you want that is really unpopular with the population you expect to vote for it
February 8, 2026 at 12:34 PM
Oh you seem nice
February 8, 2026 at 12:06 PM
Just about to read your column so that might help!

I found the fact that the 2-child policy reversal was based almost entirely around the child poverty stats to be really concerning, when just about nobody has any concept of how child poverty is measured. I have no idea of whether it’s a useful metric or not.

Is saying immigrants ‘should only be let in if they contribute’ controversial? Would have thought that was the opinion of the vast majority of the population
February 8, 2026 at 11:57 AM
I think you’re right in general but I’ve also seen done performatively by people with poor judgment after a recent promotion.

I’d say that gender ideology and pro- assisted dying are both appealing at a simple knee-jerk liberal left level, but less so once you spend some time understanding the issues more deeply
January 31, 2026 at 6:23 PM
I always find ‘fairness’ to be a pretty pointless metric to judge any policy by, people have a massive tendency to find things unfair if it benefits other people more than them. But yes agree that this is just plain dumb

But he lasted longer than most faithfuls so it could just as easily show the opposite?
January 24, 2026 at 7:00 PM
Not sure taxing successful businesses to persuade them to maintain properties that people don’t want to visit is a good idea in any respect

I’ve lived here for over 50 years and have never previously seen it spelt with an ie
January 1, 2026 at 8:36 PM
Porty spelt with an ‘ie’ is new
January 1, 2026 at 1:38 AM
Ok… I was just pointing out that using starmer’s apparent failure at politics to make your case is stupid. As he won. Not really interested in your issues with Biden, or with making up things that may or may not happen after this UK government
December 29, 2025 at 5:58 PM
Ha, slick change of subject! FFS that’s got absolutely nothing to do with my point 🤣
December 29, 2025 at 5:14 PM
But won a landslide and get to implement their policies for 5 years. Suspect they’re much happier with that than whatever your ‘winning at politics’ entails
December 29, 2025 at 5:11 PM
Keir Starmer literally won the UK general election, not really sure what point you think you’re making
December 29, 2025 at 4:44 PM
But according to self id they could all claim to be and get access to female spaces
