Cory's Corner: Micah Parsons Needs A Partner
Can the Packers get home? That is the ultimate question heading into Sunday, the biggest game of the season for both the Bears and the Packers.  Bears inconsistent second-year quarterback Caleb Williams leads the league by holding onto the ball for an average of 3.25 seconds. Obviously Williams is a profound scrambler and ad-libber but he often flies too close to the sun by holding on to the ball for far too long.  And that is the recipe for a Packers win on Sunday at Lambeau Field. The Bears have the No. 3 pass-blocking unit in the league behind the Broncos and Colts. But if rookie Ozzy Trapilo starts at left tackle, that could be a way gateway to Williams.  We’ve all seen how well Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley moves around Micah Parsons to confuse offensive linemen and quarterbacks and that’s why he’s second in the league with 36 pressures behind Myles Garrett’s 39.  But there is also a problem. While Parsons is getting all the attention from offensive linemen, Rashan Gary hasn’t been capitalizing on his opportunities. He is 35th in the league in pressures with 19 and after that, it’s Lukas Van Ness, who is ranked 105th with 10. Van Ness has been injured but even when he’s been on the field, he’s been nearly invisible. Gary does have 7 ½ sacks but he hasn’t tallied one since Oct. 26. That’s alarming for a guy that is playing 65 percent of the defensive snaps this year. If Packers public address announcer Bill Jartz belts out Gary’s name several times on Sunday, expect the Packers to be doing well. That means that he’s winning one-on-one matchups and causing Williams to hurry his throws. Williams is only completing 58.1 percent of his throws this year. He will make a throw or two that will make you scratch your head. And that’s when he isn’t pressured. Just imagine where his throws will go when he constantly has to worry about a pass rush? It’s apparent that the trade for Parsons has been well worth it. Forcing opposing quarterbacks to make off-platform throws while getting the receiving corps off their rhythm is a big part of the game. Parsons has 12 ½ sacks this season — that’s the most a Packers player has tallied since Zadarious Smith had the same number in 2020. But in order for the Packers to start a tradition of playing Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” late in games as a tribute to the defense, Parsons needs a consistent partner. Parsons has been a one-man wrecking crew with six sacks in the last three games, but Chicago’s offensive line is going to force someone else to beat them.  Can the Packers get home?
