they did try that, and everyone had a go at them for being 'too negative'

halve from an undeniably high level (due to Brexit). Labour aren't driving the saliency of the issue. Hardcore Reform voters are lost, sure, but there will be a lot of voters for whom high levels of immigration is an important issue who won't vote for Farage if Lab is seen to be taking it seriously

agree more is needed, but they did just introduce the online safety act, which is one of the most stringent regulations of online content anywhere in the world.

that would certainly be a serious problem if IHRA did 'treat criticism as antisemitic,' but as i've already pointed out, it doesn't.
July 27, 2025 at 3:14 PM
examples that 'could, taking into account the overall context'...'criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as antisemitic' is she really saying she can't teach arendt with those caveats. Come on!

we already went through this re civilian deaths! we don't agree on this, its fine. we can agree the war should end though, hopefully.
July 15, 2025 at 1:43 PM
if you don't accept the initial premise then the entire argument collapses

Israel is committing genocide - no theyre not, they have other aims - they're lying about those aims - why - because they're committing genocide - no theyre not, they have other aims - theyre lying about those aims
July 15, 2025 at 1:39 PM
if they were just targetting the top personel, then yeah, makes sense - but they weren't, they were targetting Hamas's entire infrastructure. Which is threaded through the civilian infrastructure. I have no problem with opposition to the war, i just think the arguments for genocide are weak, inc OBs
July 15, 2025 at 1:36 PM
that's just a circular argument, as half of the replies to my post are.
July 15, 2025 at 1:34 PM
i'm not even pro-war, I think they should have stopped months ago. But an accusation of genocide that doesn't even pretend to engage with the Israeli logic is very weak, and unconvincing to those who are not already convinced.
July 15, 2025 at 1:16 PM
the israeli argument is that 7 October meant that Hamas continuing in power was intolerable. The war is being fought to remove Hamas from power and prevent them from rearming. Hamas use tunnels and hide within the civilian population, greatly increasing the risk to civilians.
July 15, 2025 at 1:15 PM
yes but it is a very one-sided account, and therefore unconvincing to those who are not already convinced. The whole article is a rehash of things he's being saying - and been critiqued for saying - for a long time. There's nothing new here, and the weakness of his position remain unresolved.
July 15, 2025 at 1:12 PM
this is just a circular argument. If you want to convince other people you need to do better than that.
July 15, 2025 at 12:26 PM
it is fundamental to understanding Israel's aims and intent in the war. You can't just pretend these things aren't factors, as much as it makes the genocide argument easier to make. Hamas don't seem to exist for Bartov at all.
July 15, 2025 at 12:24 PM
rightio
July 15, 2025 at 11:26 AM
the word 'tunnels' doesn't appear in that article. There is one mention of 'hostages.' An argument about genocide that doesn't properly engage with those two aspects of the war is skipping over two of the central issues at stake.
July 15, 2025 at 11:18 AM
yeah that's my theory too (as an EHCP parent). I expect they will try to rebalance it. The system as it is is clearly not working for anyone.
July 14, 2025 at 1:10 PM
why do you think the numbers of EHCPs have rocketed so much over the last few years? Surely that's the key question here.

everyone always says this, but the UK rap/grime/down tempo/Afrobeat scenes are massive, and all made by working class kids on a computer basically. Guitar music is dead, for sure, but not the rest
July 10, 2025 at 3:11 PM
exactly. i find it odd that the people who had the strongest critique of austerity and the damage it would do (correctly) are also the people who seem to believe that that damage can be remedied in 12 months or less

in the US you mean? they had many many problems, and stealing Trump's popular policies didn't rank very high amongst them tbh
