The segregation rate in Hamilton was four times higher than the provincial average. The longest time someone stayed in segregation at the Hamilton jail in 2022-23 was 21 days. The United Nations says anything more than 15 days is a form of torture.

The story includes a searchable database you can use to compare the segregation rate — the estimated number of times a prisoner entered segregation in a year — of each Ontario-run jail to the provincial average.

I'm grateful to be a finalist for RTDNA Canada's Emerging Journalist Award.

It's an honour to know my reporting on policing for CBC set me apart from the 50 applicants across the country.

The winner will be named on Oct. 20 — and win or lose, I'll keep digging. #cdnmedia #rtdna #cbc

There are 357 shelter beds and rooms in Hamilton.

Last year, 6,110 families were on the waitlist for public housing. Just 1,082 got housed. #HamOnt

Then there’s the “formal” complaint process through Ontario’s ombudsman.

Annual reports show the number of these complaints from Hamilton inmates rose annually until COVID.

But former inmates say this system has its own set of problems — it’s too slow. 3/4

Documents show complaints from #HamOnt inmates made via a toll-free provincial hotline. They’re considered “informal” complaints.

They range from a cancer patient who can’t get pain meds to a reported sexual assault.

There's no way to know if the complaints got resolved. 2/4
