The Information turned 30 this year, as did my son. I remember because I brought the novel to the hospital with me when my wife went into labour. Not necessarily the first book you would think of when you're thinking about the miracle of birth. (I wrote any essay about The Information this year.)

When I hiked the New Hampshire part of the Appalachian Trail in 2010, I met a long-haired, grey-bearded guy in tie dye whose trail name was Hippie and it turned out he was an engineer for a weapons company. A long strange trip, indeed.

Maybe I wouldn't say "favourite" because it was a lot of work, but my one actual lab science class was first-year physics and I found it gave me a new understanding of how the world (above the subatomic level anyway) actually works.

Sadly, strangely, it doesn't meet the dictionary definition of scandal, which includes "causing general public outrage." Why it isn't causing general public outrage is a matter a matter for mass psychoanalysis, perhaps.
