something i've been thinking about here is that the media in general (at least where i am in the uk) is getting way more violent and authoritarian. it's always been a bit shit but there's been a step change recently

one explanation: the treasury has too many roles. it's in charge of the economy. it's in charge of government finances. it's in charge of spending. these things are not compatible (or at keast not always compatible) and lead to everything being half-done
