$918 million in new projects added to the plan this year, but we only received $88.5 million in the last year - we're going backwards, unfortunately. Greatly appreciate capital funding we've received over the last several years, but funding needs to be stepped up in a BIG way to make any progress.
The Surrey Board of Education is seeking $5.7B in funding for 76 major projects to meet student space needs.

Last week, the board approved the 2026-27 Five-Year Capital Plan, with requests for new schools, additions, sites, replacements, seismic upgrades and building envelope projects.

A great in-depth report that demonstrates the need for an appropriately funded provincial plan - relying on school districts to independently reach the provincial climate goals is not going to get us there, given differing geographical needs, states of infrastructure, and growth across the province.
🌍✨ Stable Funding for Climate Action: A Critical Need

✔️Sustainable and predictable funding is the backbone of climate action in schools.

✔️School boards need to integrate sustainability into all long-term capital planning.

Yes, kudos to Queen Elizabeth Secondary students for being great ambassadors inside and drumming up enthusiasm outside with banners and good cheer, as well as staff and admin for their help organizing along with the students. And thanks to all the donors! Nice to see Mayor Locke there as well.
