Happy Trans Day of Visibility y'all! I want to take a moment and explain why this day is important to the trans community using an experience I had over this last year. During my first post-election phone call with my dad, discussing how in the work orange man got re-elected, he made the point that a lot of people on the right and Republicans were worried about "trans issues," started stating a lot of the typical conservative transphobic talking points about how trans women who used women's bathrooms were dangerous and how trans women shouldn't participate in women's sports. I am not out to my dad (yet), but this still deeply upset me, knowing full well how this would affect me, but moreso all of my trans femme friends. I snapped, and started berating him about it, telling him how my friend's lives were in danger, how they just wanted to be able to pee in peace, and that most of them didn't give a shit about sports. I didn't let him get a word in edge wise, and ended the call after I had said my peace. My dad isn't perfect. He's a Christian, Boomer, registered Republican, cishet white dude. He's the exact audience the Republican party speaks to. But, I am his child and, not only does he love me unconditionally, he respects me and knows me well enough to know that, if I make something a hill to die on, it's worth it. I didn't talk to my dad for a week after this call, nor my mother. During this time, my brother, who I am out to, worked to mitigate the situation. After a few days, my brother encouraged me to call my dad. When I did, the first words out of my dad's mouth were, "I was wrong. I'm sorry." My dad had taken the time over the week and done his own research on trans issues and saw just how deeply engrained transphobia was in our society currently. He likened it to how the gay community was treated during the height of the AIDs crisis, which, honestly, isn't too far off. He saw that trans lives were in danger because of the policies this administration would be enacting, and that the Republican party's perspective on trans people was unjustly wrong. All it took was for my dad to read the accounts of trans people over a few hours throughout the week for his ENTIRE perspective on the issue to change. I know not everyone is like this. I know I am incredibly blessed to have the dad I have, but I'd like to think that my dad isn't that unique. Too many transphobes and people who support anti-trans legislation don't see trans people as actual people. They don't see them as their neighbors, their coworkers, or even their own children and their children's friends. They are a subjective boogeyman to them, not real, living, actual people. The more people see us, the more people cannot deny our humanity. I've continued to talk to my dad about trans issues since November on occasion, particularly when something big comes up or makes headlines on national news. He's still learning, but he now understand the gravity of the situation and the fight trans people are currently engaged in for their rights to live as themselves in this country. He's interested in meeting all of my friends, but my trans friends in particular, only because he doesn't have any real social relationships with trans people currently (that he knows of).
