It would explain why we needed to create a vessel before being allowed to enter the world of Deltarune, even if that vessel ended up being discarded by... someone or something before we, as the soul, could occupy it.

Makes me wonder if there's a vessel with Kris' original soul somewhere out there.

In addition to the other comments, Kris seems to also need the soul for special actions like sealing a dark fountain, or using the souls' light to boost certain ACTs.
I've also heard a theory they can't stay in dark worlds without the soul.
