Don't overthink it, just do what you can do a couple of times a week. You don't have to go really fast, you don't have to go that far, it will come as long as you keep doing it.

And don't feel bad about anything, running is for everyone. I say "be light", it's nice, but I'm not so light now!

Even some stuff that was locally popular 20 years ago, enough that I own some CDs, barely exists on the internet now.

Even more of a problem with stuff that only exists online. It's actually quite easy for it to just disappear.

When I started cycling about 25 years ago I'd never heard of this dude but I realise now a lot of the things people would say just parrot what he was saying.

Absolute jerk and surprisingly influential, but governments & auto groups were very happy to "do nothing", which helped it along.

You should try to if you want to, don't let a bad experience rob you of something you enjoy in life.

Getting back on is hard, easier if you can find a safe place to restart or people to help.

It's been over 2 years now since I had a cycle accident - in sport, not with a vehicle - where I fell and fractured a vertebra, and some other pretty serious stuff.

I'm lucky to be out riding again, but getting past the feeling that "something painful is about to happen" really lingers.
November 20, 2025 at 10:56 PM
To be more serious, you do need to draw a line somewhere and sell/use what you have. I could see the argument that a technical line might benefit some organisations.

I wouldn't underestimate that it's more fun to boss developers around than what else someone might be meant to do.

I think it's been done.

The most successful software firms are the ones releasing utter garbage that everyone hates.

Your product gets out sooner and you get to charge more for updates.

Oh I wonder which unelectable turd will be in charge next?
November 20, 2025 at 7:21 AM
Fwiw I had not really thought that much about it - I should know more about how people behave in power. I'm firmly anti shithead.

I'll accept the correction.

In a local suburb to me (Sydney Aus) it took residents dragging furniture into their streets at peak times to get appropriate traffic controls.

Yes some people will roll through stop signs but do we make groceries free because some people might shoplift otherwise?
November 20, 2025 at 6:19 AM
Well I can't speak about others' experiences, and I wouldn't know what I'd see on the news that would affect that?

I'm not talking about famous or economically successful people, I'm talking about knowledgeable people. I'm not statistically meaningful, maybe there's lots of assholes.
November 20, 2025 at 6:14 AM
I know a few who act like that, but it's generally self limiting, because you won't get on with the others you need to learn from.

So IMO it's rare to see genuine assholes at the top of their field.

You sometimes get experts who are so busy that they can't spend much time on people though.

I kept getting sold heavy support shoes that I didn't need. One day I went for a run in much lighter neutral shoes that I hadn't bought for running and it was much better!

Ran an ultra marathon in "speed" shoes and it was great.
November 20, 2025 at 3:02 AM
Mobility has no correlation with injury rates in running but there are other reasons to do it.

I have appalling mobility, can't even cross my legs, but I can run really well without issues.
November 20, 2025 at 3:00 AM
Be light.

I did a bunch of things when I started but the things that made a big difference were consistency (3x week) and getting my weight low. Both for speed and injury prevention.

I have a fractured vertebra now which means I get sore, not as quick as I was, but still going ok.
November 20, 2025 at 2:58 AM
It's gonna get smudged that's its purpose.

Like your car is gonna get dirty because it stops the dirt going on your person.

One of my case handles is now mostly tape. It's fine.
November 20, 2025 at 2:27 AM
High priced luggage is not any more durable, the most easily damaged parts are closures, wheels and handles, which don't really get any better.

Also a hard case makes no difference, the case will transfer shock to items inside unless you have padding.

Luggage locks do nothing.

It can be cheap.

If you've seen OS AI prompt next to web browser AI prompt next to website AI prompt you know it's probably gone a bit far and then some.

People who don't want to answer a genuine question are not generally knowledgeable on the subject.

People who are knowledgeable want to answer that question and more.

The only exception is when questions are not being asked in good faith, and are actually just a rhetorical device.

Designed for failure. If many (like 4) people use it, they will overflow the islands.

Like many pedestrian and cycling facilities they are designed to be present, not to be used.

The other day I read someone talking about programming today not being similar to what we learned in the 90s, and instead we should call it "vendor ops" - using different vendor products together.

Praise BigTable! Insert coin to continue!

I recently went back to a Linux desktop and the amount of stuff you can run that *works fine with the files on your computer that you own* is the best benefit so far.

And if you just need a web browser it's got that.
November 19, 2025 at 8:29 AM
Completely unnecessary for Microsoft to do that. Like so many things they go into a market, get people using their products, then decide they're not interested and dead end their stuff.

MS has the resources to make Publisher up to date and they should do so.
