I don't think it's completely lost. My mom is attending an esl program at the Berkeley adult school. There are recent immigrants from all over the world studying together, the program is very effective and free to residents. And most of students work.

Stabbed unlikely but encountering someone yelling, sleeping on multiple seats, mumbling incoherently, playing loud music and behaving aggressively when asked to lower the volume or engaging in some other not necessarily criminal but unpleasant behavior is very likely.
