Slowing the US and World economy and thus buying us time to fight climate change. Not since Covid helped slow the world economy will we see another hard brake on emissions like this.

And now we sit on a mountain of content created, production for use of another kind, and all of us are now tasked with firing that gun, consuming all that content, for what else is that content for other than consumption and what else are we here for?

There's a weird discussion in the classic film "His Girl Friday" where the sad sack victim Earl Williams recounts how he decided to shoot a police officer because the pistol he had was made for shooting, "production for use" as described by our heroine in her opinion piece.

My father may have been right about intellectual property, the right IP is king now, bigger than our studios and stars even, but not all IP is the same.

But this has not centered artists and art, it has in fact caused the further commodification of art into content. Artists are not centered, they are just grist for the mill, capitalism converts all of this into consumption units, making them easier to ingest, that is what capitalism does.

Yes, society has in some ways freed up time, made more leisure possible, made it possible to consume content anywhere and anytime. Maybe we're as busy as my parents were in the 1980s, but now we can watch an episode of "Running Point" or "White Lotus" while sitting on the can or brushing our teeth.

And now as I see the major streamers and studios pumping out enormous amounts of content....I think my father got it wrong.

He was also focused on the fact that his writing would become ever more valuable as intellectual property as our society turned more towards leisure and content consumption, though that term was not used back then.

My father is a writer and he said that as society becomes more industrialized, people will have more leisure time and with that, artists like himself will become more important as we will as a society have more time to consume and appreciate art.
