hows the City of Vancouver imagine it's going to enforce new peak hour bus lanes when they can't even enforce the current ones or any other traffic law. It's constant: this car's been sitting 10 mins. while drivers violate the law on the other side too. Paint & automated enforcement is the only way.

If there's a place to see auto speed enforcement working it's Colborne St E, Brantford: even almost a KM away from the current location, drivers are consistently staying under 60 with many I'd say going exactly 50 (the max permitted speed) This also leaves Brantford Police to do more important work.

These ones happen to already have prefab modular buildings (5 floors I think?) next to each station too! (white rectangle)

if you squint you can sort of see a similar phenomenon in Toronto with the 1967-1998 pre-amalgamation boundaries, which I'm not brushed up on my Toronto history but might assume were the parts of Toronto heavily planned and developed before the 1950s?

Not an original thought, but was looking at the Strava walk/run heat map and its always funny when you still see the 1911 City of Vancouver boundaries somewhat. Really shows that the parts of the city developed in the '20s-50s dropped off in density and walkability. Map via Strava, crude lines by me

Buses need automated enforcement cameras: this 19 Kingsway bus honked at this guy, just sitting in his car idling, and he not only refuses to move, he started to back up and then stopped. he ended up delaying a bunch of ppl instead of parking a few metres away, because it couldn't get out quickly

The only "warning" you entitled to when you're in a reduced speed zone, especially for a school and playground, is a speed limit sign, maybe a limit change ahead sign. anything else is just extra as a treat: drivers should simply follow the law (of course we should also redesign the roads, too)

We spend a lot of time & resources on fare evasion, but the dozens of cars I witnessed at 3pm ignoring the bus lane for multiple blocks on Georgia—delaying packed buses, disrupting traffic & delaying far more riders— affects riders way more in both time cost and actual cost than a few $3 fares would

I hear the CBC and Service Canada have some great resources on writing a resume for your first job out of university 🤭

the full route for those interested. I've been told it may have been quicker to take the BT 9 to the GO 15, then GO 41 to square one and any route to Pearson.
April 22, 2025 at 7:47 PM
arrived at the airport a few minutes after 3, meaning a total trip time was around 2.5 hours. if I got the bus directly from Hamilton it would have been more competitive with driving at an hour and 20 minutes. One thing the GTAA needs to do is improve the bus loop, it's not the best compared to UP

a very bad picture of the Toronto congestion I skipped taking transit with Bus priority:

ITS HAPPENING. this is the edge of the Eglinton (west?) LRT project, which will connect to the Eglinton crosstown and the Eglinton east LRT projects.
April 22, 2025 at 6:48 PM
I have reached the edge of TTC network. almost at Pearson now
April 22, 2025 at 6:48 PM
The transit way has very large stations, and is no doubt great to pass through especially to get to Pearson. Unfortunately not much density means they often don't have much ridership compared to other segments of this route. The 40 operates as limited stop thru here.
April 22, 2025 at 6:42 PM
Mississauga is also getting an LRT. The Hurontario LRT (which Ford renamed Hazel Maccalion LRT) is making progress (I think?) but I'm not hopeful with the current Metrolinx track record. didn't get pics so here's a transit oriented Walmart instead.
April 22, 2025 at 6:40 PM
the majority of folks got off the 40 at square one in Mississauga, which is a classic shopping mall turned town centre vibe we have come to love in Metro Van, but without rail transit serving it. the result is a bit of a weird form where there are a lot of towers as well as big box mall style stores

Though it's not as bad as the US, you really see what unlimited induced demand and highway-oriented sprawl can do to a place when you visit the GTA. It's better than before, but hard to serve places like Halton, York and Peel Regions effectively. Brampton has started to show it's possible though!
April 22, 2025 at 6:23 PM
the 407 congestion free as often it is. It shows how pricing can stop congestion as long as it's set correctly, but could use more variable tolls and public ownership to keep the tolls lower as a public good. the 407 suffers the same as rail: why pay when trucks on the 401 are basically free?
April 22, 2025 at 6:18 PM
On the 40 now! this bus will take me all the way to the airport! often it's about as quick as driving from Hamilton, given it takes the 407 and Mississauga transitway, both of which effectively keep it out of congestion. 407 needs to be used more efficiently but they need to keep buses moving too
April 22, 2025 at 6:07 PM
Hamilton has been really building a real downtown. They also have been doing traffic interventions like road diets, bike lanes, crossing. improvements and banning Right on Red. some ppl didn't like that and kept honking while I crossed at the right turner. A lot of work to do to get Vision Zero ofc
April 22, 2025 at 6:07 PM
Another new development is that HSR journeys are fare free from GO. last time I did this I broke their fare system because of the transfer back to GO but it should be fine now I hope. also look, an overcrowded B-Line, where have I seen that before 👀
April 22, 2025 at 6:07 PM
next, a free transfer to any HSR route. I took the 51, but others also get you there. these will be replaced by the Hamilton LRT one day! I also like how Ontario agencies put their logos on the sheets sometimes, love a fun quirk
