Cass didn’t know Mer, but her neighbors back home spoke it. She knew when it was being spoken. Disgruntled and cranky, Cass swung her feet to the floor. She yawned like a stretching cat. Then, Cass stood and slipped on a pair of flats. The hallway was empty, because it was almost 2am and Nox Academy had a strict curfew. Any late-night studying or gathering had to be done quietly enough that the RA wouldn’t hear. Unfortunately, Cass’s shoes slapped loudly on the tile floor. She cringed when she heard it. Every so often, she would stop and listen for the watery voice. As she approached the stairwell, Cass heard it again. It sounded pleading, almost desperate. Cass walked downstairs until she reached the first floor, where the biggest kitchen in the dormitory was. The dishwasher sloshed through its rinse cycle, and the ice maker churned ice even though no one needed it now. Nothing weird, Cass noted.

Katherine smoothed her plaid skirt. “I’m on the train. I should be there tonight, I hope.” She paused. “We’ll get ice cream after dinner, yes?” “I’d never miss it,” said Briar. Ice cream at Herbie’s, the quaint spot in Downtown Grimwick, has been their thing since tenth grade. The two said goodbye, and Katherine went back to her memoir. Despite the grim contents of the book, Katherine couldn’t help the smile that bloomed on her face. Nothing could ruin her last year, not even her bitchiest classmate. She was absolutely sure of it.

At the end of Necromancy, Cass passed by Katherine's desk and left a small wrinkled piece of paper. Library @ 5. Katherine glanced back incredulously, and made eye contact with the window-starer from the day before. Rai, Katherine recalled. They smiled. She smiled back. She would never admit it out loud, but Katherine was thankful for the note. She nearly passed out in the shower, and her skin had a blueish-purple tint to it. Something was horribly wrong, and it was related to the events of the basement. Katherine didn't want this mysterious occurrence to ruin her last year at Nox.

i found There There by Tommy Orange at my church’s book swap. the author is part of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. it’s been on my shelf for a bit but eventually i’ll read it!!!

Uquiz result: Longing You create from longing. It is the overwhelming desire for what remains out of reach that defines your work. You are someone who is always wanting for something. The endless craving gnaws at you to the point that it would consume your every thought if you couldn't find a way to let it out. The nagging sense of lacking drives you to create, to give your desires an audience so that they do not devour you from the inside out. Creating something from your desires makes the sense of emptiness less acute. It's a way of obtaining some measure of fulfillment in spite of the constant craving for more. As long as you can create, an outlet for your longing is the one thing you can't be denied.
