Patriarchy is a mental illness. Pro-democracy, atheist, game developer, believer in experts. I worship my wife and that's enough for me. 💙 Tryna be a warrior for democracy but still searching for the front line.
Bummer I thought I had found a kindred spirit in someone pedantic enough to complain about "literal." Like, I do that all the time too! But I'm really not following your argument so I guess I'll just move on. Nice to meet you though.

So I only got down to the first item before I got confused. If 97 cents a pound was the lowest turkey price since 2019, how come we have this other paper right here that says it was 88 cents a pound just last year? That's a 10% increase.

Oh sorry I didn't mean to imply that you did. It's a society-wide problem that "AI" is being used to mean "anything that a computer does that seems really cool."

You could say, Sam didn't actually say the word "literal" anywhere in the source article, or anywhere else. So I am putting words in his mouth. But I feel like the way these AI companies are acting, many of those people really believe that they are communing with a higher power.

I believe that whether the usage was literal or not depends on the speaker. So if the speaker believes that she is speaking about a true literal being, then the utterance was literal. It's your religious beliefs (which I happen to share) that say the devil doesn't exist, but are you sure Sam agrees?

Oh and my wife was trying to use AI-adjacent algorithm to try to make wind turbines more efficient, by recognizing power fluctuations earlier and reacting to them.

For context, my oldest son is doing some theoretically useful stuff at an internship with some techniques that some people would call "AI", using it to try to find new treatments for tuberculosis. And he's not just sitting there asking ChatGPT to do his homework, I swear. :)

Hmm I’m with you that the word “literal” is used when it doesn’t mean literal. But in this case I really meant, literal. I don’t think his investors would be as excited if he were merely trying to summon a garden variety metaphorical anitchrist.

It should be a crime to lump together what OpenAI is doing with practical AI research. While Sam is performing ritual sacrifice to try to summon the literal antichrist, other people are using related algorithms to try to actually help humanity. It does no one any good to call them the same thing.

I have this idea for an anti-subscription service. The way it works is, when you anti-subscribe to a newspaper, your money is distributed to every other newspaper in the country.

Imagine what we could accomplish if we could have someone as smart as this guy running our country.

There are indeed several things that give that impression.

He's seeing the souls of all the lives he has destroyed flash before his eyes, and wondering, was it all really worth it?

He says "I'm a great father" which might be true, but it does mean at some point in the past he had an opportunity to turn that into a gig as a great husband, and blew it. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a second chance either, just that already being a father is not an unalloyed positive thing.

Wait, what? I have biceps too...what's different about his that make them a red flag?

When I remember what Iran was like in the 1970s versus now, I'm reminded just how very badly things can change for the women of a country when religious nutjobs take over.
Yes, it could in fact happen here. It's already begun.

By aiming suspicion elsewhere, they waste supervisory capacity that could uncover their depravity. Plus fewer people allowed to be youth pastors both opens up positions for them, while also reducing supervision. And, it’s also in-group virtue signaling. It’s a perfect storm of unhealthy incentives.

Here’s a crazy idea. He could do his job for the first time in his life. He could prevent Democrats from sweeping the midterms by holding Trump accountable for something. Just one thing might be enough. But I’m not holding my breath.

Great roundup! Btw you meant 2026 not 2016 (I know I would like to have that decade back too please).

Except, it's Congress's job to restrain the president, and Congress is in session. You wouldn't know it from Mike Johnson's vacation schedule, but that's because of the Epstein files, not the budget.
